Was in Chitre about 4 yrs. ago. The town has been upgraded a lot in this time. I was there for a model airplane meet so we did not really come as visitors or sightseers. However the Azuero peninsula is a great place to explore.
The church, the museum, the ballpark, the mall, are all good places to see. If you want to experience life as a local, this is your place. We speak very little Spanish, but had no trouble communicating what we needed or wanted. You can eat at trendy looking places and pay trendy prices, or eat where the locals eat and pay 5 bucks for two people and eat local fare. The Museum De Herrera is quaint, but informative and organized. The water tower is another claim to fame for Chitre. The ballpark was closed for renovations while we were there. We walked everywhere during the day and felt completely safe all the time. The bus system is excellent and a convenient and inexpensive means to travel the entire country, which we did. At every station, someone would help us find the correct bus and we almost always could find someone who spoke enough English to help.
