Southport has the last fuel facilities in southern Tasmania,...

Southport has the last fuel facilities in southern Tasmania, and is too small to support a supermarket, but if you're looking for peace and tranquility in a bushland/forest setting, and friendly, helpful locals, it's a great place to set up base. Visiting Hastings Caves and (warm) springs, and Cockle Creek, are not to be missed. We stayed at Southern Forest Accommodation, a self-contained cottage provided by a lovely couple who really care about hospitality. We were able to cook our own meals, and apparently the nearby hotel also offers meals, which we did not try, but otherwise the nearest restaurants would be in Dover.

Lovely remote area and lots of walks.

Lovely remote area and lots of walks. But its got no phone reception so bear that in mind and we found it lovely and quiet. The beaches are pristine but being that far south its on the cool side. Nearby catarmaran and you need National park pass over the bridge to enter the walk to whale sculpture. Hastings caves and thermal pool not far and Dover a great little town. The hotel at Southport was good for evening meal as its the only eating in the town with a little takeaway next door, so need to prepare for that.
