Cozy hotel, right by the Ichinose Family ski area. The staff is absolutely amazing, 100% focus on making your stay pleasant. We went there for a ski trip and it was really convenient. The public bath is great for after skiing, and both dinner and breakfast buffets were excellent, with many good quality choices.

We stayed in the caravan, which was a trailer home on the slope. We could almost ski directly from it. The place was well set up for people who want to make their own food, of which we brought a lot. It had a big refrigerator, microwave and electric kettle. We ate on the floor from the coffee table, but there was a sofa that you could also eat on. The trailer had its own internet router which worked very well for streaming Netflix; something not typical for Japanese ski resorts. The hot water heater worked very well as well, meaning nice hot showers. The room had a small bath but there was a small but clean indoor hot tub at the hotel that is free to use. The place is very close to the Ichinose bus stop. You can take the bus for free to any Shiga Kogen area slope. But frankly it was not necessary as we were already right on the slope.

Breakfast was great with lots of options. The staff were so lovely and very willing to assist with rides to see the snow monkeys, as well as picking us up at the train station and dropping us at the bus stop for the ski bus. They also provided space in the lobby to store skis.

It was lovely! The food was good. They took into consideration our allergies. They have private and public onsens; indoo4 and outdoor. The tatami room was just like picture. They had buckwheat pillows. It was 10 min? walk to see the monkeys. Quiet.

We stayed at many ryokans on our trip. None came close to Yamazakiya. The host family are friendly beyond belief, always smiling, always helpful. We got a free pick-up from the train, drop-off to the train and round trip to the snow monkey park. The place is cute, we had a huge room with fluffy, comfy tatami beds and a sitting area. Everyone got yukatas to wear around the house. It's a small place with two private onsens and we were easily able to book both for an hour for our group of four, giving us the chance to try two different rooms. We had messaged ahead to book dinner (good English spoken), a vegetarian option was no problem and my, what a treat we got. It must have been 10+ little courses, fine dining at its best. All around, highly, highly recommended! If you enter through the front door, don't forget to take a stroll out the back door - it leads straight onto the village's main street, filled with many cute, ancient houses.

Might be better in winter, but in spring only thing to see was monkey park, and that only takes a few hours ( mostly travel time) as it isn’t very big. I was of impression it was a whole mountain, but it is just one small area you see the monkeys from.
I’d suggest staying in nagano which was nice, and coming to Yamanouchi for a morning.

While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys,...
While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys, it wasn't what stood out to me about the area. The snow monkeys just have too many tourists to be truly enjoyable. Yamanouchi has beautiful mountain views, charming winding streets with quirky decorations, and onsen hopping among different ryokans is something to look forward to. If you look behind the main street, you'll see many stairways leading to many shrines. We had dinner at a sushi restaurant ran by an elderly couple, on traditional tatami floors. It felt like eating at someone's house, and they absolutely stuffed us with delicious sushi. Two nights would probably be the best to fully wind down.

Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields.
Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields. Need to have better maps (in English) available for the runs. A (live) board showing which lifts and runs are open would be great, prior to entering the areas.
The snow was amazing!!!!
Restaurants were good however the area appeared to be directed at locals (Japanese) rather than tourists. We had to do a lot of work to find somewhere to eat.
It would be great to have some public onsens available in the area.

Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park...
Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park was the absolute highlight of a trip filled with highlights. Specifically we stayed at Onyado Hishiya Torazo, and loved everything about it - the room, the food, the staff, and the oh so relaxing onsen! We made the mistake of only booking one night and the short turn around combined with outside temps down in the low 20’s (F) meant we never did try any of the public onsen. Trust me - two days here is the minimum!
Snow Monkey Park ended up being another highlight (and between my wife and I, we have about 1,000 pictures to prove it!). Before going we were concerned that it might seem contrived at best and a bad situation for the monkeys at worst. But they were absolutely there of their own free will and happily making use of the large onsen on a cold winter’s day. Get there early - we got there about an hour after opening and wished we’d been an hour earlier. It started to fill up about 20 minutes after we got there.
Here’s the weird thing, and the only downside - and I don’t quite know how to explain it. The town was basically closed! And we were there Jan 26-27, a decent snow had fallen a couple days earlier and a light snow fell the morning of the 27th. I thought this would be big tourist season, but we barely saw another sole in town. And those few we did see were almost all tourists out taking pictures in their yukata. This made for a very quiet morning, which was great. But we had planned to pick up our luggage at the ryokan after visiting the monkey park and meander through town stopping to eat, drink, or shop as we made our way to the train station. But nothing was open so we caught an earlier train and ate in Nagano while waiting for our Shinkansen.

Its a great spot for visiting the snow monkeys and a quick snow board at Ryuoo Ski Resort. A walk through the older Shibu Onsen town is also fun for people who like that. We went to three different restaurants in the town and they were all good.
The negatives were that the roads and paths were slippery with ice, so bring appropriate footware if visiting in winter (although your hotel might have some).
Almost all places were cash only.
We were positively surprised in every aspect of our stay.
Amazing room, superb staff “accueil “ , two banquets (dinner and breakfast) of incredible quality , onsen beauty, hakama (kimono shaped pieces for use be in the hotel be outside in the onsen street) quality and variety ( one for winter other for inner use ) . The private onsen was amazing but I guess any room in this place would make guests happy . It is definitely unfair to qualify it as a 3 star, it should be more .
Very cozy traditional Ryokan. Beautiful garden and private onsen, room with view of the beautiful garden. The owner is incredibly friendly and helpful! Breakfast was delicious, a feast. Definitely do the 9 public onsen tour in the traditional clothing they provide. I stayed there over Christmas and it was the perfect way to celebrate in the snowy beautiful Shibu Onsen at night. Highly recommend this place!
Location is superb being in the heart of Shibu onsen at Yudanaka. Also free pick up and delivery to the station and the Monkey Park. Some good restaurants within walking distance. Being a local Ryokan, has key access to all of the 7 public onsens which I used. What a treat. Just strolling around town in Yuakata provided is fun. Owners were very hospitable and there was also an onsen in the Ryokan.
Yes, it is a dated hotel. However, the value, location, friendly staff and nightly dinner buffets more than make up for it. Conveniently located across the Tagamagahara lifts and near the bus/shuttle stops. Hotel will also aid with your Yamato/Ta-q-bin delivery/pickup needs. We booked a private bathroom room and it was very roomy with enough space/storage for 4 of us. Would stay here again.
Everything was perfect! The room was wonderful and it was so fun staying at a traditional Japanese hotel. I loved picking out my Yukata. Undoubtedly, the best part was the private onsen on my balcony. It was pure heaven. Second best was the amazing and traditional food. This hotel was a wonderful highlight to my trip. Everyone was kind and helpful. This hotel could not have been b better
We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Housei with super friendly and funny hosts, the most delicious food and a room with a private onsen, all kept traditional which was a great experience for us. Also free Shuttle Service from and to Yudanaka Station/Snow Monkey Park.
This stay will be a lasting memory.
We hope we can come again some day.
Arigato.
A traditional style onsen hotel. The hotel is dated, but its a traditional Japanese experience so don't let this put you off. The couple who run it were really lovely and welcoming. The indoor and outdoor onsen was a highlight with great view of the mountains.
Traditional japanese style breakfast - japanese curry, miso soup, vegetables etc.
Gorgeous location and extremely friendly and helpful staff. The hotel has a very homely feel and an adorable dog. They have everything you need, including ski rental. The hot baths gave a cosy, onsen vibe and we highly looked forward to it after a long day in the cold mountains. Overall, highly recommend. A really nice place to stay.
We liked the onsen baths, nice Japanese buffet breakfast with western (cereal, toast, and pastry) options, location 2 minutes walk to chairlifts, and Teppa Room! We also enjoyed the kaiseki dinner for my husband's birthday. Ichinose is a good area to stay if you want to try dinners at restaurants outside of your hotel.
Onsen was amazing- there was both an outdoor and private option (private for a fee). Staff was soooo attentive and kind, the details were immaculately thought out and executed. Ideal location to get to from the station, and get to the monkey park- hotel shuttle was great. Tea station and little fridge were amazing!!
The hosts here were a standout, so enthusiastic and helpful, driving us to the monkey park, advising us where to visit, and lending us snow boots.
The outdoor private onsen experience was also very special. The indoor onsen at the hotel was good and convenient.
We really liked the views from our top floor room.
The location was great, there was plenty of snow so the skiing was great. The staff were very friendly. The 'Black Cat' service offered at the hotel efficiently and economically transported all our ski gear to our last hotel for the trip home while we did some touring around Japan. We did enjoy our stay.
The staff were so welcoming and catered to our arrival time. The onsen located within the hotel was great and we loved the option of having both a indoor and outdoor onsen. Rooms had everything we needed. We also loved that the hotel provided transportation to and back from the Snow Monkey Park.
Reasonable price for such a good location and two private onsens. Old school feel, don't expect modern amenities but everything you could want will be provided like a tv, kettle, and microwave. Short walking distance to all the onsens of Yamanouchi.
Our stay at this traditional Ryokan was exceptional. The hotel is beautiful. The onsen's are beautiful and relaxing. The food was delicious. Highly recommend staying here if you're looking for a traditional ryokan experience.
Our hosts were really friendly. They took us to the monkey park and get us from the Yamanouchi station as well.
They have private and public onsen as well.
The rooms are warm and comfortable.
Ski in, ski out was great. Delicious and many options for breakfast. Amenities in hotel room were great. Received great assistance from staff to transport our luggages via yamato.
Traditional Japanese style hotel, great experience.
Tasty breakfast, many options to choose from. Super close to ski lift, literally 2 minute walk. Hotel has Public baths.
extremely helpful and friendly staff, super efficient hotel. great location to Shiga ski area, quality ski rental, lovely indoor and outdoor onsen, delicious dinners
