We stayed in Ohakune to ride the Old Coach Trail - a walking and cycling trail that runs between Ohakune & Horopito. It's a grade 3 trail and we rode it both ways but most people get a shuttle to Horopito and ride it one way. Lovely trail with thick bush, viaducts and views to Mount Ruapehu.
There are a reasonable number of restaurants/cafes in Ohakune, considering it's a small town. We had dinner at Osteria, which was OK. Utopia had nice coffee and pastries.

We re-visited the Chocolate Eclair shop after a number of years, now under new management, eclairs still amazing. Nice town with the accent on it's access to the snow fields. In the winter season the town would be buzzing but in April very quiet.
Our fish and chip dinner was very disappointing in spite of glowing internet reviews, wouldn't recommend. We should have asked a 'local'

Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria - Italian, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, very popular. Enjoyed a 3 hr return walk into the Hapuawhenua Viaducts along the Old Coach track (need vehicle/shuttle to get to start) and great area for mountainbiking. Went for a drive up the mountain road with awesome views, and a stop at a nearby waterfall. Then a 1 hr native bush walk ( Mangawhero Forest walk) where friendly little fantails and robins flew about and you could hear the whoosh of wood pigeon high in the trees. Dinner at the PowderKeg - a pub setting with dining area. Again, lovely food and within walking distance of accommodation this time. Good supermarket in town and looked around shops (some vacant as is the case with many small rural towns now) and lovely playground/walkway at the Carrotland Adventure Park, then morning cuppa at the Chocolate eclair shop before departing town.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing.
We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing. it's a 35/40 min drive to the car park.
We didn't arrive until the afternoon, settled in then went out for dinner.
Hiked the next day and chilled the day after which we were very glad to rest as the hike for incredible but my body was a bit sore the next day!!
Left after checkout on the 3rd day.
The best place for dinner was the Cyprus tree (book as it getting really busy) it was one of the pricier places we ate but definitely worth it.
Osteria was nice too, cheaper, and had more of a pub feeling.
We went to the Mountain Rocks cafe for breakfast- it was cheap and cheerful. The coffee was very nice.
we had food off the menu but they had lots of cabinet food which looked nice too. Savoury and sweet treats.
Ohakune is a very small town, it suited us perfectly as we had activities to do. Lots of small walks and a waterfall too.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Lots of walks of easy access, some without a car. Lots of trail rides (MountainstoSea).
Enough shops + New World (small version of it!) and heaps of cafés and restaurants make Ohakune an easy town to venture from in Summer.
Large selection of accommodation, from backpackers to chalets to Powderhorn Chateau.
Fantastic little house in a row of 4, close to the walks with a great little Cafe just around the corner. Really well supplied kitchen with appliances, cookware etc. Good sized bedrooms. Cute little outside area. Host is fabulous to deal with. House was spotless, probably the cleanest private house I've stayed at. We travelled at Christmas, so Ohakune in general was very relaxed and quiet.
THE POSITIVES: The home was light, airy, and spacious. It was well equipped and had all the conveniences you would need to enjoy a few days away with friends. Great location to restaurants, bars, and cafés all within walking distance. Situated in a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood. We enjoyed the logburner ambiance.
We had an amazing time in Ohakune and phenomenal stay in Ohakune. The accommodation is beautiful and the host was warm, informative and gave us tips on where to eat. We both loved the spa with the speakers and seeing the mountain. Stunning and would highly recommend.
Loved the decor of the room and hotel, few things a little dated in the bathroom and room which could use refreshing. Reception were lovely and a good guide to the area. Resturant was good service for understaffed and busy with rugby, everyone was lovely.
We had a wonderful 2 night stay here. The accommodation was clean, spacious and had a washer and dryer as well which we weren’t expecting. The kitchen had with cutlery and cooking supplies along with a dishwasher which isn’t commonly found here.
Location was good. Good it has everything you need. Full kitchen, bathroom and laundry and seperate bedrooms. Would be good to know there was the option of your own private spare or slightly more comfort and upgrades in different chalets
Ideal for walking to town amenities. Bonus access to walking track with native bush. Off street parking meant no car worries.
Friendly operators and bonus utilities make it a notch above the majority of motels.
Ohakune is an small town, but the location of LKNZ is in the city center, next to the stores supermarkets, etc.
The kitchen is clean and fully equipped.
Is a good option for one-night maximum.
The host was friendly and accommodating to any questions or information we needed. The Lodge was beautiful with lots of space and excellent rooms. Would definitely stay there again!
Very clean and quiet motel. Family run. In a very good position in Oakune for the town and Powderhorn Chateau where we ate. Also next to the river walk. Ideal for our stay.
it was a comfortable and clean motel unit on split levels which provided more space. good shower pressure. older style unit but everything worked and was tidy.
